Letters about Literature

I got you this lab time mostly for the Letters About Literature contest. Here's the link to the official site: www.lettersaboutliterature.org

Here's the gist:
1. Select a fiction or nonfiction book, a short story, poem, essay or speech (sorry--no song lyrics) you have read and about which you have strong feelings. Consider one or more of these questions when writing your letter:
  1. Did the characters, conflict or setting mirror your life in some way? How?
  2. What strengths or flaw do you share with a character or characters in the book?
  3. What did the book show you about your world that you never noticed before?
  4. What surprised you about yourself when you were reading this book? Why was the work meaningful to you?
2. Correspond, don't compliment! Your letter should inform rather than flatter the author.
3. Do not summarize the book's plot! The author wrote the book and knows what happened. What the author doesn't know is how the book affected YOU.
4. Suggested length: 500-800 words.
5. Letters will be assessed on Content, Writer's Voice, and use of language skills, organization, and grammar.

This is a national contest sponsored by Target. You could win a $500 Target giftcard and $10,000 for your school library.

When complete, please upload to Moodle. I put an uploader in the 10 minute play section.

Also, you can work on your play (final version due Thursday; upload to Moodle) or your poem (1st version due Thursday; put on your blog).
